Gear Guide: Finding the right fleece

Gear Guide: Finding the right fleece.

You won’t find a good outdoor supplier that doesn’t sell fleece – there’s a reason it’s been an adventure staple for 40+ years!

This man-made fabric offers a solid layer of warmth, whilst being breathable, lightweight, and importantly, affordable. It was named after the ‘fleece’ coat on a sheep since it mimics the soft and fluffy texture of the natural fibres. Despite the name, fleece is not a natural fibre – it is a type of polyester.

As well as offering warmth, fleece is quick drying and easy to care for (chuck it on a gentle cold wash and air dry it) these all make it perfect as a mid-layer if you’re sussing your gear for those winter hunts. But it can work just as well as an outer layer on its own too.

The final reason it has stood the test of time, is because it does just that. Its lasts. Fleece is extremely durable; we know for a fact there are some seasoned hunters out there still wearing their Ridgeline fleece that’s seen a few more seasons than they are willing to admit.

What’s the difference in fleece options?

The main difference is the fleece weight – measured in GSM. The higher the gsm the heavier the fleece and the warmer it will be.

Heavy-weight fleece, sometimes referred to as polar fleece range around 300gsm+ and sit at the high end of the warmth scale. These can be used as outer layers in the colder conditions, or even as part of your layering system where superior warmth is needed.

Mid-weight fleece for medium warmth range 200 – 300gsm and these are spot on to add to your kit as part of your layering system but can also be an everyday outer layer in temperate conditions.

Light-weight fleece, sometimes referred to as micro fleece is at the lower end of the gsm scale 100 -200gsm. This is good for general wear.

Is Fleece waterproof?

No, but it is moisture resistant and quick drying. To go one better we do have a range of bonded fleece tops and jackets that give you an added layer of water resistance. This means they have a water resistant and windproof membrane so they can withstand a few showers no problem. However, they don’t have fully sealed seams, so the water can leak in at the seams if you’re exposed to too much rain.

How to choose the right fleece

This is relatively simple – how warm do you need to be and what layer are you using it for?

Aside from that the choice is just which colour you want.

  • Hunting – check out our camo patterns
  • On the Farm – we have a range of solid colour options
  • Safety – Blaze camo will keep you seen when you need to be
  • Kids – we have a range of bright colours and camo for kids too.

Caring for your fleece

Although its easy to care for, fleece is flammable and doesn’t handle heat too well. For best results wash your fleece on a cool gentle wash, and air dry it. Ensure you don’t tumble dry or iron it.
